Tarifa Island Seawatching

The island of Tarifa is connected by a manmade isthmus just into the Strait at the southernmost point in Europe. This vantage site gets us a close as possible to the seabirds, which can be difficult to identify from large distances.

Each year, thousands of seabirds pass through the Strait entering to the Mediterranean Sea in autumn and return to the Atlantic Ocean in spring. Up to 35 species have been spotted in the Strait of Gibraltar, including Northern Gannet, European Storm-petrel, Leach´s Storm-petrel, Pomarine, Arctic and Great Skuas, Puffin, Caspian, Lesser Crested, Sandwich and Black Terns. One hundred thousand Cory’s Shearwater and masses of the endangered Balearic Shearwater are the highlights every year.

Seabirds, an amazing view of the Moroccan coast and with luck also dolphins and whales are waiting for you at this site, which also boasts a fascinating history.
